Watergate
Break-In: On June 17th 1972, 5 Cuban exiles were arrested at the Watergate hotel in Washington D.C. The individuals were Bernard Barker, Virgilio Gonzalez, Eugenio Martinez, James W. McCord, Jr. and Frank Sturgis. These 5 Cuban exiles planted listening devices and surveillance tape inside the headquarters of the Democratic Party. However President Nixon denied putting these 5 men up to this. At the Watergate hotel a security guard found surveillance tapes and followed them all the way, to find the burglars. Nixon did not confess to this, therefore he had to resign as president before he was impeached.
Investigation by Washington Post: The investigation by Washington post was a huge factor in the 1970's, investigating the topic of Watergate. The Watergate Scandal came to be investigated by a senate committee, special prosecutor, and by a judge in the original case of the break-in. In the course of a harsh ruling judge by the name of John Sirica, this judge was assigned to the original Watergate burglars. Judge Sirica believed that President Nixon definitely had a part in this Scandal, but the burglars claimed they acted alone. John Sirica questioned a defendant by the name of James W. McCord. On March 29th, 1973, the defendant McCord sent a letter to the judge stating that the Watergate Scandal was a conspiracy. The investigation on Watergate by Washington post turned into a story from a "third rate burglary", to a Scandal reaching the highest points in the government.

The Smoking Gun Tapes: The Smoking Gun Tapes was when the supreme court forced Nixon to give up the tapes, which 5 Cubans installed in the Watergate hotel. The "smoking gun tape" was the most damaging tape of them all. This tape was found after they approved articles of impeachment on President Nixon. The tape is a recording of an Oval Office meeting between President Richard Nixon and chief of staff H. R. Haldeman, that provided proof of Nixon's role in the Watergate cover-up on June 23rd, 1972. This effect was devastating leading to Nixon resigning himself before becoming impeached.
Nixon's Resignation: President Nixon had articles of impeachment out against him. Realizing that the Senate house vote would not fail, Nixon had to immediately resign before he was impeached. Nixon, on August 9th, 1974, was the first American president to actually resign from office. He would never confess about the tapes in the Watergate hotel. In 1974, a supreme court case was broke out, call US VS. Nixon. In this case the police found out that the burglars were being used for the Committee to re-elect the president. The burglars had to turn over all tapes and were sent to jail. Nixon was also forced to resign after the tapes had shown conversations about him trying to block the investigation.
